Alaska Paving Season: When Asphalt Can Be Placed and How to Plan

Last updated

In Anchorage and most of Southcentral Alaska, residential asphalt paving generally happens from roughly mid-to-late May through September, with the exact start and end set by weather, ground conditions and when local hot-mix asphalt plants are producing. Sealcoating has an even narrower window that favors mid-summer.

When is paving season in Anchorage?

Paving typically runs from late spring, once the ground has thawed and dried and asphalt plants open, until early fall, when cold nights and wet weather make proper compaction difficult. Mid-June through August usually offers the most reliable conditions.

Why temperature matters so much for asphalt

Hot-mix asphalt leaves the plant at high temperature and must be spread and compacted before it cools too much. Below a certain temperature it stiffens and won't compact to the right density, leaving a more porous surface that lets water in and ages faster. Several conditions speed up cooling:

Many agencies and contractors use minimum air or surface temperatures (often in the 40s°F, rising) for placing asphalt, with stricter limits for thin layers. Your contractor's judgment on the day matters more than any single number.

A month-by-month look at a typical year

PeriodWhat's happeningGood time to...
January-MarchGround frozen; no hot-mix pavingResearch contractors, request estimates, look at your driveway's winter drainage problems
AprilBreakup: snowmelt, thawing ground, soft and saturated soilsNote where water ponds and where heaves are; avoid heavy loads on soft driveways
MayGround thawing and drying; asphalt plants typically begin the seasonFinalize contracts; early-season jobs once base is dry
June-AugustPeak season; warm temperatures and long daylightPaving, base reconstruction, sealcoating, crack filling
SeptemberCooler nights, more rain; season winding downFinish paving early in the month; crack filling while dry
October-DecemberFreezing temperatures return; plants closeCold patch for emergencies; snow-management planning

Dates vary year to year. A late breakup or a wet summer can shift everything, and conditions on the Kenai Peninsula, in the Mat-Su or at higher elevations such as the Anchorage Hillside differ from the Anchorage bowl.

Why breakup is the wrong time to judge (and the right time to look)

Spring breakup is when pavement is most vulnerable: thawing from the top down traps meltwater above still-frozen soil, so the base is saturated and weak. That's why Alaska roads often have spring weight restrictions. It's also the best time to observe problems. Walk your driveway in April and note low spots, standing water, soft areas and heaves, then show your contractor photos.

How to plan your paving project

  1. Winter: Make a list of what you want (new paving, widening, overlay, repairs) and collect contractor names.
  2. Early spring: Request site visits and written estimates. See our cost factors and bid checklist.
  3. Spring: Sign a contract with a target window, confirm permits and arrange 811 utility locates.
  4. Before paving day: Move vehicles, trailers and toys; arrange where you'll park while the asphalt cures.
  5. After paving: Follow cure instructions and schedule first sealcoat for a later season.

Can asphalt be paved in fall or winter?

Late-season paving in cold weather is possible for commercial jobs with special mixes and techniques, but for residential driveways it raises the risk of poor compaction and early raveling. If a contractor offers a deep discount for a late-October job, ask how they'll achieve proper compaction in the cold, and consider waiting until spring.

Frequently asked questions

What month should I book a paving contractor in Anchorage?

Start contacting contractors in late winter or early spring. Schedules fill quickly for the short summer season, and booking early gives you time to compare estimates.

Is it bad to pave asphalt in the rain?

Yes. Rain cools the mix and can prevent proper bonding and compaction. Reputable contractors postpone paving in steady rain or on a saturated base.
